Bangkok Winter 2024 Arrives October 29th

Thailand Meteorological Department Announces Expected Start of Winter 2023
Bangkok,

25 October 2023 – The Meteorological Department of Thailand today announced that the country will officially enter winter on 29 October 2023. The winter season is expected to last until late February 2024, based on the criteria used to determine the start of winter in Thailand. This year, the onset of winter is about two weeks later than the historical average.

Dr. Sukanyanee Yawinchan, Inspector General of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, and Acting Director-General of the Meteorological Department, revealed that the criteria for determining the start of winter in Thailand include:

  • Consistent low temperatures: Minimum temperatures in upper Thailand consistently below 23°C.
  • Wind direction: Northeasterly or easterly winds at lower altitudes (100-3,500 meters) and westerly winds at higher altitudes (above 5,000 meters).
  • Decreasing rainfall: A continuous decrease in rainfall amount and distribution in upper Thailand.
Based on these criteria, winter in Thailand this year will officially begin on 29 October 2023.

Dr. Sukanyanee added that this year, the weather is expected to be colder than last year, with the average lowest temperature in upper Thailand around 20-21°C (compared to 21.6°C last year). The coldest period is expected to be from December 2023 to late January 2024, with the lowest temperatures around 6-8°C, mainly in the upper parts of both the northern and northeastern regions. Mountain peaks and high terrains will experience very cold weather, with frequent frost.

In Bangkok, the lowest temperatures will be between 16-18°C, while surrounding areas will experience temperatures around 14-16°C.

The southern region will experience cool weather in some areas, mainly in the upper part, but heavy rainfall will continue. The Gulf of Thailand will experience strong winds with wave heights reaching 2-3 meters, while waves in the Andaman Sea could be up to 1-2 meters high.

During November and December, there is a possibility of strong low-pressure areas or tropical cyclones approaching or passing through the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region. This could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to many areas, along with strong winds and storm surges with wave heights of 3-5 meters.

The public is urged to closely monitor announcements from the Meteorological Department.
